con.text.ual flow

More work on the first con:text (still haven't sorted the branding of this project, colon or period) piece over the weekend.
Didn't quite work out how I imagined but still looking promising.
I shredded and then super-washed (twice) the fabric text piece, hoping to soften the inkjet transfer but it's still like parchment ... which might work. The lines of text will have a lot more body to them in the finished piece, woven in around the beaded elements.

... but you will have to wait for the jewelry bits to emerge.

Tall Tales for Father's Day

Tall Tales for Father's Day:
a stroll in the woods
one day while hiking, i fought off a ferocious bear in the woods
(carved bear by Tom Reid, woods painting by Valerie Simons)

In honour of all the dads who love to tell tall tales to their children, why not celebrate Father's Day with a reminder of their hyperbole and scaremongering?
My own father told bedtime tales so vivid that, even now, I'm unable to drop off to sleep with even a foot protruding from under the duvet or (heaven forbid) hanging over the side of the bed. His descriptive passages involving children with dangling limbs being trimmed by the ferociously dentured crocodiles which dwelt under each bed were punctuated after storytime by him peering round the bedroom door, thrashing his out-stretched arms up and down in the manner of a vicious toothed beast seeking its next meal. This was of course accompanied by guttural roaring noises, presumably similar to those emitted by hunting reptiles in the throes of a blood lust.

He was mortified many decades later, when I told him how scarred I was by this.

Did you know, I'm also creative with the truth?

fibre friday: con.text

2012-05-25-10-49-28-952

Have at last started work on a series of pieces for a gallery show this July - the working title is con.text or con:text (whichever I think has the typographical clout) and will be work inspired by chunks of text. The title is a play on words around the first project.
This morning I heat-transferred a 419 email contents onto a thrifted remnant of cream silk ... hence con text!
If you need any more clues, try googling Nigerian scam :)

Port Moody Library Display Case May 2012

more of my words and pictures :)
Port Moody Library Display Case May 2012:

tiles by Pauline Doyle,
glass leaf by Margret Billings
pendant by Luci Gimenes

The Blackberry Artist's Society is primarily a local artist cooperative which strives to bring unique, handcrafted work by our members to our community through our gift shop in Port Moody Arts Centre . One of the ways we promote this is by getting out there into our community.
vase by Jacq Sheridan

Our members display their work every month in the mezzanine display cases at City Hall (just up the stairs on your way to pay business licences, dispute traffic fines and so on ...).

Another display venue available to us (and other Tri Cities artists) are the display shelves beside the Port Moody library reception desk. This area is primarily used for showing smaller scale 3D works in a secure but accessible venue.

All items on display are for sale. All you need to do is make a note of any details, e.g. artist, title or description of piece, price, and then phone the gift shop on 604 931 2008, ext. 102, to reserve your prize and arrange collection.

PS: Don't forget about our current exhibition at Port Moody Arts Centre, Inspiring Each Other
running until May 27th!
watercolour by Elizabeth Wallace, jewelry by Amanda Maxwell
Our artists will also be on hand with demonstrations of their art at the new Port Moody Art in the Garden tour, July 15th.

today's crafty exploits

I'm slowly inching back into creating mode. It's been a while since I actually re-stocked inventory (seems not so long ago I was tallying up inventory for tax season!); college assignments took a huge bite of time, I'm currently in my work experience semester, and selling is always slower post-Christmas.

However, I must start making again. I'm signed up for the Canada Day fair in Coquitlam and have opened up both of my Etsy shops again.

I also have a gallery show on the go, and another one coming up. And I'm still embroidering the power station for Port Moody's Stitching Our History project.

Phew! This weekend's domestic creative endeavours inspired me to get back to my studio bench :)

Wish List

Wish List:

For Mother's Day I would like this beautiful watercolour by Elizabeth Wallace, and a luxurious woven scarf by Beryl Hickinbottom.
What's on your wish list? and do you think you can get down to the gift shop faster than my nearest and dearest?
