fibre friday: brocade wire and fibre cuffs

I will have a clutch of these new wire and fibre cuffs for sale at Coquitlam's Canada Day celebration at Lafarge Lake on Sunday. The artisan village is open from noon to 9pm so please drop by.
I'll be demo'ing some felting and a few other techniques I use (and probably finishing up the clasps on these cuffs too!).

studio portrait thursday: melted

molten glass, originally uploaded by ebbandflo_pomomama.

My new torch is hot enough to melt a dichroic glass cab while firing some art clay silver.
This has never happened before.
To say I'm perturbed is putting it mildly.

Critter Adoption Post: Hop on in!

from the Blackberry Artist's Society blog

Critter Adoption Post: Hop on in!:
intarsia wall frog by Del Holbrook
Now that summer's finally here to stay (unless of course I've jinxed it with this scheduled post), why not stroll down to the Arts Centre on St. John's Street and pay a visit to the gift shop?

This ribbetting little chap is eagerly awaiting a new home.
You've never met an intarsia wall frog before?
You need to visit ... soon.

fibre friday: summer wire and fibre

2012-06-21_13-26-09_494

Part studio portrait - totally fibre friday. I took my work outdoors during lunchbreak on Thursday.
Experimenting with adding embroidery threads to the wire crochet. Looking good, I think - a kind of stiff wire brocade. I hope to have a selection of these as cuffs next Sunday for Coquitlam's Canada Day celebration next door to the Evergreen gallery in Town Centre Park.

studio portrait thursday: clutch of clay close up

2012-06-19-10-53-31-869

I'm still drumming up the courage to fire these with my new über-hot torch (which appears to be hot enough to melt glass).
If they survive, they'll be fine silver charms for pendants.
Wish me luck!

City Hall artist of the month: Jacqueline Sheridan

City Hall artist of the month: Jacqueline Sheridan:
This month, ceramic artist Jacqueline Sheridan has a beautifully eye-catching display at City Hall. She's included some new work, featuring red trees on a black and gold background, and some exquisite pierced vases in black, gold and red.

Just follow your nose upstairs to the council chambers and voila! there's the display case. Jacqueline's work will be on display until the end of the month, with more available in the gift shop.

As usual, all work is for sale through the gift shop (604 931 2008) to make arrangements).

fibre friday: threads

2012-06-14_22-30-48_769
I enjoy my work :)
Look at all this wonderful fibre - waste threads or thrums from weaving (from the amazingly talented Beryl of Blackberry Artist's Society) for me to play in ... I mean with!

studio portrait thursday: firing up

2012-06-14_22-31-11_760

Mainly art clay greenware ready for firing if I can pluck up the courage to use my new incendiary device. My new torch is so hot it can melt glass (not kidding - pic to follow as evidence).

Currently thinking: oh crap, I need to make new inventory.
Currently wondering: where is my creative spark?
Currently planning: two new gallery pieces for the con:text project.

Plain Sailing

Plain Sailing:

There's nothing better than a themed post falling right into the lap of the writer, and this happened when I put my call out for Father's Day items in the gift shop. Two of the artists who answered, Valerie Simons and Vicki Allesia, left these beautiful miniatures (approximately 8 inches square canvas panels) in the vault for me photograph.

So, for all those sailing dads out there - why not keep them afloat even when scuppered on dry land? Beautiful views up Indian Arm on board that graceful sailing vessel. Give dad something to remind him of summers afloat, serenity and pitting his wits against nature ... an escape from the family or dreams of leading his own scurvy pirate crew.

June's Featured Artist: Sandra Ho

June's Featured Artist: Sandra Ho:

This months' featured artist is fellow jewelry designer Sandra Ho, whose graceful designs to adorn the necks, wrists and earlobes are a firm favourite in our shop.

Sandra kindly agreed to answer our questions this month.

  • How long have you been an artist?  I am a Graphic Designer who turned Jewelry designer in the past 10 years.

  • Where did you train? Kwantlen for Graphic Design, self taught for Jewelry.

  • Do you work in a studio or at home? Home studio

  • Do you work as an artist full-time, part-time, or do you squeeze in the creating as a hobby? Squeeze in the creating as a hobby to part time, depending on the season

  • Describe how a piece progresses, from first inspiration to finished object in the gift shop. Most of the time I will work on pieces around the shapes and colours of the materials I'm using.  Sometimes I have a particular design in mind and will scout for suitable colours, shapes and textures to complete a necklace and it may take several months to complete.

  • What's your favourite piece to make? Earrings

  • Who inspires you, and why? My mother, because she is a remarkable woman

    fibre friday: frill seeker

    2012-06-09-20-05-45-406

Knitting with ribbon mesh yarn - frill seeker by Estelle. Not completely convinced but it's an interesting technique making waves and ruffles by knitting in the edge of the mesh.
There is a free pattern download at estelleyarns.com, with links to a YouTube tutorial.

studio portrait thursday: con text in progress

    2012-06-07-22-56-31-206

I started working on con text. The ribbons hanging from the collar hold the 419 text fragments in messy disarray. I've strung some showy costume pearls and threaded wire, beads and baubles in with the textile to overdo the whole effect.
