fibre friday

2012-08-31_14

I've been given a stack of silk hankies to play with. :-)
Not sure what I'll do with them yet - embroider them, add them to some wire cuffs, knit with them perhaps - until I know they'll sit on a shelf being beautiful and inspiring.

fibre friday: the vitruvian boy

the vitruvian boy, originally uploaded by ebbandflo_pomomama.

Last couple of weeks of summer holidays so not much benchwork going on amidst the fulltime parenting.
But we do get to do some fun stuff :)

pencil outline of Wee Guy on canvas scrap, illumination using whatever paint supplies we have around the house

end result = one cool wall hanging

Summertime ...

Summertime ...:
photography print magnets by Sarah Ronald
..... and the living, allegedly, is easy.

Sometimes it is so, especially when the living is in a holiday cottage or vacation rental, or even cutting everything loose to stay under canvas in a wooded glade (though maybe not so much with the recent thunder storm). Cue endless days, tempo rubato living.

Suddenly it's packing up day, deciding which special rock or twig to keep in the kid's suitcase and how many new sandbuckets is too many. Will the tinned cookies survive the trip and did we remember a gift for the house-sitting neighbour? Hitting the road unconsciously in early morning to make the flight, sliding a key under the doormat, spending a listless day doing nothing much, waiting for a late departure time ... whatever; parting is (allegedly) such sweet sorrow.

But memories refuse to be left under the doormat. Unconsciously un-packed, they travel with us as shells or photographs or ticket stubs. From each and every holiday, re-emerging to light up a drab workday moment or never-ending laundry list back in the mundane humdrum reality.

Memory as souvenir, sweet sweet souvenirs.

a big to-DO

I have a few items from this year's 'home is where the heart is' show in another gallery exhibition, this time in New Westminster. The Amelia Douglas gallery inside Douglas College is hosting a staff/student/faculty exhibition, a big to-DO. The gallery's normally closed Sundays but this weekend is the New Westminster Culture Crawl so it will be open 11am to 5pm.
Please visit (pretty please).

vroom vroom

More digital doodles.
Last night's session.
:)

I'm considering (and need to make a decision really fast since class starts tomorrow!) taking Carla Sonheim's Watercolour Transfer Paintings online class  to give my creativity a bit of a kick start. I took one of her Silliness classes (now available as at-your-own-pace workbooks herea few years ago and she is an excellent teacher.

salad days: lettuceOK OK - I'm not a 2D or watercolour artist. But sometimes it's inspiring and motivating to move into another medium, something you're not really familiar with. I took a shibori workshop a year or so ago. It's textiles so not totally out of the box, but dyeing fabric is a new one for me. My wet lettuce collar was the result - wire crochet trapping a length of shibori-dyed silk.
wire ... metal ... fibre

Let's see what happens from the watercolour workshop! Stay tuned :)

fibre friday: the power station, a WIP

1344096715097
I'm still ploughing (or stitching) on with what's turned into my magnum opus, based mainly on how much guilt it's accumulating sitting untended in the embroidery basket in the corner.
This week I added some couching to vary the lines of pipework (and omg, there is an awesome amount of pipework to complete) using two different shades of grey for texture.
The grey, oh the grey of it.
Just for some fun i'm planning to add some splashes of colour in odd places.
But for now I plug away with the grey.
On a side note, and somewhat more inspiring, the embroidered floral initial is bound for framing soon. I washed it last night after checking in with the framer for matte board, stand offs and frame yesterday. Today - ironing then off to the framer.
Yes - i'll update with pics :)

studio portrait: out in the field

This afternoon, on my way home from work, I called in to the Blackberry Gift Shop to photograph the monthly featured artist display. Writing blog posts and keeping up with social media is one of my volunteer roles for the society.
I consider writing and my amateur photography part of my creative life, so this week's studio portrait is me out in the field at work :)
